SATURDAY
SCREAM SK8: DON”T MISS IT
Our next night-time public skating session will be held on
Saturday October 27 from 7.30-10pm. Mark
it in your diaries and plan to be there. The theme is Scream Night – so get
your scary costume planned now. There will be prizes for the best theme costume
for members and non-members. Entry is $5 for members and $8 for non-club
members. All proceeds will go to the international travel fund for 2008. We have had no response to our request last
month for prizes so still need a really good prize for members and some spot
prizes – if you or your employer has something they could donate please ask
them. Donations of prizes will be gratefully received by to Mary-Anne Thomson
thanks. The committee asks all club members who are nominating for
THANKS: Thank you to Ken Wright for making up the poster for our Saturday
Scream Sk8. To

club would appreciate if you can print off a copy for your school/business etc.
ARTISTIC OCEANIAS: Artistic Oceania Championships will be held in
Palmerston North from April 19 to 26 2008. Selections are scheduled to take
place at the 2007/2008 New Zealand Nationals. If you wish to be considered for
selection to the Oceania team please complete the appropriate forms which are now on the
notice board. These forms must be to the Club Secretary by Saturday October 13,
together with the appropriate nomination fee. No late forms will be accepted.
The Artistic Committee have
agreed that for this year only, because the selection criteria for Oceania’s
has been changed – that is the competition from which the 2008 team will be
selected is Nationals 2008 not Graeme Shepherd 2007 - skaters may compete in
both their National grade and the grade for which they want to be selected for
Oceania 2008 for at the New Zealand Championships only. Skaters who elect to do
this are not eligible to take a dais position in the grade for which they want
to be selected. They will be eligible to take a dais position only in the National
grade that they are skating.
For example: a skater who turns 18 in 2007 may wish to
complete the year in the Junior grade but because of age would have to move to
Senior if they wished to qualify in the Oceania team for 2008. Under this
allowance, they may compete all competitions in the 2007 competition year in
the Junior grade PLUS they may skate the Senior grade at New Zealand
Championships only to trial for selection. Skaters will need to nominate for
selection in the event they want to be considered in. They are also requested to file a special
entry form for the event/s they wish to be selected in. This entry form is also
available on the notice board and needs to be completed and paid for by Areas
so these can be handed in with Area entries
RAFFLE
WINNER: Congratulations to the Dean
Family winners of the “tree” we raffled during and after Upper Hutt Open
Competition. Thanks to all who supported this fundraiser by buying a ticket.
RINK
SIZE/MEDAL TESTS: The Artistic
Committee has advised that Judges will not be lenient in medal test situations
because of errors caused through the size of the floor i.e. crossing the centre
line of the rink in dance, distorted patterns, stroking being done without the
correct power. Please bear this in mind when training for local medal tests or
selecting the venue at which you sit a test.
MEDAL TEST PASS: Congratulations to Emma Patrick who passed Medal 5 Solo Dance in Palmerston North last month but was inadvertently left off the list of passes in last month’s newsletter. Sorry about that Emma.
PATCH PASSES: Well done to the following people who have passed patches so far for
September:- Patch 1; Holly Martorana and Ashleigh McAra, Patch 2; Terri Ann
Randle and Jade Paterson, Patch 3; Leigh Bathgate, Patch 4; Kirsten Foley.
SKATER/COACH OF THE MONTH: Leigh Bathgate was our Patch Class skater of the month for August – she is consistently
working hard and making excellent progress. Congratulations also to Sarah Pratt who was Patch Class coach of
the month for August. We really appreciate all the voluntary time Sarah gives
to help others learn to skate.
MORE COACHES/SUPERVISORS NEEDED!!!!!: Patch class is so busy that we desperately need more voluntary coaches.
The coaches we have do a great job under a lot of pressure as there are simply
not enough coaches for the skaters coming along. If you are a skater or former
skater of appropriate level and can spare even an occasional Tuesday night to
come along and coach, the committee would really appreciate it. We also need
more adult supervisors who are prepared to get out on the rink and help with
basic level coaching and enforce behaviour management. Sometimes it is
difficult for the younger coaches to coach and keep the group on track at the
same time. No experience necessary!!!! If you can help please just come along
on a Tuesday night from about 5.15pm to 6.30pm and see Fiona Patrick.
NEW MEMBERS: We welcome Logan Crozier, Kaleen Hart, Jackson Maunsell, Hollie Godstone,
Cole Kennedy, Vicki Kennedy, Shaylem Manihera, Pallas Potter, Vynka Vera,
Ashleigh McAra, Marjorie Cashell, Nathaniel Cashell, Ashleigh Hunter, Holly
Martorana, Lena Martorana, Luca Martorana. And welcome back Sarah-Jane Jones.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ENTRIES CLOSE AT AREA CHAMPS: UHRSC Skaters who qualify at Areas to skate at Nationals will have to
complete the entry paperwork and pay entry fees at Areas as soon as they know
they have qualified. Paperwork will be provided to all who are aiming to
qualify for Nationals prior to Areas. Please complete this paperwork and be
prepared to pay your entry fees and pass the paperwork and fees to Treasurer
David Linney, before leaving Areas. No late entries will be accepted.
UPPER HUTT CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION: Please
keep the evening of Saturday December 8 and all day Sunday December 9 free as this is the weekend we will be holding our Club Championship
Competition. We encourage everyone to attend - this is a friendly competition
for all club members –artistic, precision and speed - from Patch 1 and Kiwi
Speed, through to International level skaters. We have special grades for each
patch, other beginner grades and National Schedule Grades and aim to have every
club skater take part. Patch Class skaters will receive more details about how
they can take part early next term. More details about how to register etc,
next newsletter.
CAN YOU OR YOUR BUSINESS DONATE A TROPHY?: We have some events for which we currently don’t have trophies. We
like to award a trophy as a record – the winners name is engraved each year and
they have the trophy for the year. It is then returned and awarded again the
next club champs. Its fun for the winner to receive a trophy and as they are
perpetual trophies it’s a great piece of club history. Please can you/your
business consider donating a trophy or asking your employer to donate a trophy.
The donor’s name is engraved on the cup and mentioned every year in the
programme so they get good recognition for their support. We have some great
Upper Hutt families and businesses represented so far!!!! Trophies cost from as
little as about $20 through to as many hundred as you want to spend. Please
talk to Mary-Anne Thomson (5289127) if you would be prepared to consider
donating a trophy.
MONSTER GARAGE SALE: Thanks to everyone who donated
goods and helped out in many ways (making signs, sorting and pricing,
publicising and manning the stalls on the day to name just some)towards our
recent garage sale. We will let you know how much we made next newsletter.
CADBURY CHOCOLATE SALES: As another fundraiser for National skaters we are again selling Cadbury
Chocolates. These will be available soon and we ask all families to make the
effort to sell as least one box to friends and family. Even if you don’t stand
to benefit this year – your turn is likely to come. It helps when all club
members support each other. If you think you can take more than one box – that
would be even better!!!!
CHRISTMAS RAFFLE: Our
final fundraiser for National skaters is a monster Christmas Raffle. We are
aiming to have several quality prizes. We would particularly like items which
can be used in a Family Fun Pack or a Pamper Pack. Please can you ask your
local fish and chip shop, hairdresser, cinema, supermarket etc for an item.
We’d love food vouchers like McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, Pizza Hutt, etc
and entertainment vouchers like Staglands, movie tickets, rock climbing passes
etc. Please be bold and ask.
