SKATE NZ, CENTRAL AREA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Upper Hutt skaters did exceptionally well at Central Area Artistic Championships held in Palmerston North recently. Thirty two members qualified to represent the area at Nationals. And between them the team brought home 59 medals – 29 gold, 18 silver and 12 bronze. In four events – International Inline Freeskating, Cadet Freeskating, Youth Solo Dance and Intermediate Figures, Upper Hutt skaters won all three top spots – in fact the top four in Cadet Free!!!!. Upper Hutt skaters also won gold in all novice events and our Masters skaters did us proud with Roger and Paula Boulcott winning Masters Men’s and Ladies figures respectively as well as together taking the silver in Masters Dance Pairs. Paula also won the bronze medal in Masters Solo Dance and Masters CSD. Basil Jones won gold in Masters Solo Dance and Masters CSD along with silver in Masters Figures. Sarah-Jane Jones dominated senior events winning gold in freeskating, figures, solo dance, and international inline. Congratulations to all. What’s happening in the pictures?? – Its all about wheels. This event will certainly go down in history as the Areas of the wheel change. Everywhere you looked people seemed to be changing their wheels for more grippy ones, or borrowing someone else’s wheels as they came off the floor - more wheels must have been changed in this competition than any other event in recent history. There were even presentations made to skaters with no wheels on their skates (see photo of Chantelle McCarthy’s very lovely legs at right) because someone had borrowed them.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007: Entry is now open for our 2007 Club Championships to be held at the rink on Saturday December 8 and Sunday December 9. We encourage every skater to take part - this is a friendly competition for all club members – both artistic and speed - from Patch 1 and Kiwi Speed, through to International level skaters. We have special grades for each patch, other beginner grades, and National Schedule Grades. Patch class skaters have started to learn routines to enable them to compete. There is a registration fee of $5 per skater with covers a small part of the cost of running the event. The club covers all the remaining costs which include judges’ transport and accommodation costs, medals, ribbons, programmes etc.

THANKS: Special thanks to Upper Hutt Mayor, Wayne Guppy; Michael Gibbs and the Gibbs Family; Hazelwoods Furniture to Go, Ascot Cinemas and Trentham City Shopping Centre for their sponsorship of trophies for some events which did not have them. We really appreciate these people, organisations, and businesses who support us in this way. In return we ask that you support the businesses listed above if you possibly can.

GOOD LUCK SARAH-JANE AND ANNA: We wish Sarah-Jane Jones and associate member Anna Carwell-Cook all the best as they head to Queensland this week to compete at World Artistic Roller Skating Championships. We look forward to hearing news from Carrara.

RINK USE DURING AMERICAN COACHES VISIT: We have had an excellent number of skaters take up the opportunity of coaching with visiting American coaches on November 24 and 25. The coaches and the individual/group they are coaching will have sole use of the rink when they are coaching freeskating and sole use of the figures area when they are coaching figures. This means there will be some disruption to times available for private practice and private coaching that weekend. The committee will ensure that a notice is up at the rink as soon as possible to advise what the coaching/rink use arrangements are for that weekend.

NATIONALS TEAM MANAGER: Our thanks to Fiona Patrick who once again has agreed to take on the very important role of team manager for our National team. Thanks for this Fiona. Please be aware, Fiona is responsible for all liaison between championship officials and our skaters if you have any queries please contact Fiona don’t go direct to the officials. Fiona will need all skaters’ contact details while in Auckland to be able to advise you of any timetable changes etc and will be collecting this information soon. More details about team meeting and arrangements next newsletter.

FREESKATING, FREEDANCE, AND CSD MUSIC FOR NATIONALS: Fiona is responsible for handing in the whole teams’ music for freeskating, freedance and CSD. Please ensure if Fiona doesn’t already have a copy of your music, or you have changed your music – that Fiona gets a copy soon – this must be on a CD labelled with your name, artistic number, the Club name and event it is for. If you have any queries please see Fiona.

NATIONALS BANNER BEARER: Flag bearing for the club at Nationals is considered to be a special privilege. Congratulations to Emma Patrick who has been chosen by the committee to carry the Club’s banner during the Nationals opening ceremony in recognition of her not only being part of the precision team that won a gold medal at 2007 Oceania’s but also her winning a silver in Cadet Ladies Figures.

NATIONALS PHOTO:  Those skaters going to Nationals please be aware that our Nationals team photo will be taken during the day of Club Champs Sunday December 9, a time will be advised next newsletter. Please be aware of this now and make sure you keep the day free so you can be in the photo. We ask all National skaters to make an effort to be present, and attired in the full Nationals uniform.

CLUB UNIFORM: A reminder to federated skaters who have a club uniform on loan:-

COLLEGE SPORT NOMINEES: Congratulations to Stefanie McCallum, Tessa Halcrow-Webb, Nika Thomson, Emma Patrick, Laura McKenzie, and Kimberley Dean who were nominated by their respective colleges for the Wellington College Sport Awards.

Congratulations to the following people who have passed patches recently:- Patch 1:- Brooke Robertson. Patch 2:- Tyler Ah-ken, Will Cooper. Patch 3:- Will Cooper, Katelyn Kennedy, Samantha Whitham. Patch 4:- Jacinta Bowden. Patch 5:- Susan Paterson, Brittany Philips, Chantelle McCarthy, Hayley Patten.

SKATER/COACH OF THE MONTH: Chantelle McCarthy was our Patch Class skater of the month for September – she is consistently working hard and making excellent progress. Congratulations also to Kimberley Dean who was Patch Class coach of the month for September. Kimberley travels all the way from Paraparaumu to help as a volunteer at patch class and we really appreciate this fantastic dedication.

NEW MEMBERS: We welcome Maddie McPhee and Edwin Hu to the club. If there is any information you need please ask other members – we have all been new to the sport once and are only too willing to help others.

CADBURY CHOCOLATE SALES: We will shortly be selling chocolates and jelly snakes as a fundraiser for National skaters for 2008. These will be available by mid November and we ask all families to make the effort to sell as least one box to friends and family. Even if you don’t stand to benefit next year – your turn is likely to come. It helps when all club members support each other. If you think you can take more than one box – that would be even better!!!!

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE:  We still need help with our monster Christmas Raffle. Since last month’s newsletter we have had just one offer of help. We want to start selling this raffle in November so please act now.  We are aiming to have several quality prizes. We would particularly like items which can be used in a Family Fun Pack or a Pamper Pack. Please can you ask your local fish and chip shop, hairdresser, cinema, supermarket etc for an item? We’d love food vouchers like McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, Pizza Hutt, etc and entertainment vouchers like Staglands, movie tickets, rock climbing passes etc. Please be bold and ask.

SUNDAY RINK USE: Full card holders and those part card holders who use the rink on a Sunday for practice are advised that a new precision team has been given permission to train at the rink from 5pm-5.45pm each Sunday from October 27 until Club Champs for the purpose of competing at Club Champs. This means the figures rink only will be available for private practice during this time. If skaters are there to practice figures this must be given priority and skaters others than those practices figures/loops must keep off the area. If no-one is practising figures then skaters may practice freeskating on the area.
