Upper Hutt Roller Skating Club Newsletter

November 2006

GOOD LUCK AT WORLDS SARAH-JANE: Good luck and safe journey to associate member, Sarah-Jane Jones as she travels to Artistic World Championships in Murcia, Spain this month.  Sarah-Jane will compete in Senior Ladies Freeskating, Figures, Combined Freeskating/Figures and International Inline freeskating. We also wish all other NZ skaters Officials and supporters a safe and enjoyable trip

COLLEGE SPORT WELLINGTON AWARDS NOMINEES: Congratulations to five of our skaters who were nominated by their college for this year’s very prestigious and hotly contested College Sport Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards. Laura McKenzie (Queen Margaret College), Nika Thomson (Sacred Heart College), Emma Patrick (St Oran’s), Tessa Halcrow-Webb (Hutt Valley High School) and Sam Wright (Upper Hutt College) did well to be recognized from many thousands of students who attend college in the Wellington region. Special congratulations to Sam – who won the speed skater of the year category. It was great to raise the profile of our sport to have Roller Sports (speed and artistic) included alongside other more “high profile” codes.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR TUPPERWARE FUNDRAISER:   We are holding a Tupperware night at the rink during patch class on Tuesday November 28 (5.30-7pm). The booking has been made to take advantage of Tupperware’s “Big Sale” week when they are a little more generous than normal.  It is also Tupperware’s mystery bag week when they have their clean out of stock, and you pay something like $25 and get a bag of product worth way more.  Another plus is that we will be able to use the hostess gifts from the party to raffle as a fundraiser for the club.  So please come and have a look. By placing your orders you not only help the club but also yourself – the more money the club can fundraise, the less we have to ask for in membership and rink fees and the more we can help with support fro medal tests and away competitions!!!!

If you can’t attend and are prepared to place an order please phone Philippa on 5265155.  Philippa will place your order and the sales will go towards the club’s total for the night. Please ask around your friends too – and place orders on behalf of your friends – every sale counts plus there will be a prize for the person with the most outside orders.

Plus there will be:

ü       A free gift for anyone who spends over $75 dollars or more on the night

ü       Anyone who books a party of their own within 21 days of the fundraiser will go into the draw for a prize.

Brochures are available on the notice board if you would like to have a sneak preview.

SPEED KING TOUR: The Upper Hutt Roller Skating Club Speed King Tour will be held at various Hutt Valley venues on December 9 and 10. Novice to Masters speed skaters will compete at four different venues. As the last major speed skating event before Nationals the Speed King Tour always attracts skaters from all around the country and provides extremely competitive racing. We encourage you to support our skaters by going along to cheer them on. For more information about the venues contact Gordon Chamley on 9712360.

UPPER HUTT CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION - ARTISTIC:  Entries close for our Club Champs on November 28. Registration is just $5 and covers all Artistic, Precision and Speed events, with all other costs being paid for by the club. The entry form is on the notice board. We encourage everyone to attend - this is a friendly competition for all club members from Patch 1 through to International level skaters. We have special grades for each patch, other beginner grades and National Schedule Grades and aim to have every club skater take part. The competition will run all day on December 10. If you haven’t entered yet, please make sure you do so as soon as possible.. Patch Class skaters are now learning routines for the freeskating part of this competition. There are also grades for solo dance, dance pairs, creative solo dance, figures, inline freeskating and precision. There is no charge for spectators, so encourage your friends and family to come along and support you.

CLUB CHAMPS – SPEED: The speed section of our club champs will be held at Riverstone Recreation on Tuesday December 12, starting at 6>30 pm. All speed and artistic skaters are welcome to enter. This competition is run Omni style where everyone starts with a time trial and then gets around four races against skaters of a similar level – so anyone can have a go. Some races are fast and skilful – others not quite so. We encourage all club members to support this event – artistic skaters too. Remember, your $5 registration for Club Champs will covers all events.

NATIONALS PHOTO AND SPECIAL PRESENTATION:  Our Nationals team photo will be taken at the end of the Club Champs programme on Sunday December 10. This is expected to be approximately 5pm. We ask all National skaters to be present, and attired in the full Nationals uniform. At the same time it will be our pleasure to make a special presentation to club member and world gold medallist, Sam Wright in recognition of his achievements at 2006 World Championships. We invite all club members to be present for this.

NATIONALS TEAM MANAGEMENT: Thanks to Fiona Patrick who has once again volunteered to be the Nationals team manager for 2007. Fiona has undertaken this role for us very efficiently in the past few years and we are delighted she has agreed to take it on again this year. Thanks also to Gary Challis who is assistant team manager.

NATIONALS MUSIC: Would all Nationals freeskating and CSD skaters please ensure that you give a copy of your music for each event to team manager Fiona Patrick by Club Champs at the latest. All music must be handed in and collected by our team manager, no late music is accepted. Fiona asks that all CDs and tapes be clearly labelled with the competitor’s name, artistic number, event the music is for and the club name. Please make sure that in addition to the copy given to Fiona, you bring a back up copy with you to nationals in case of music malfunction.

ALL NATIONALS SKATERS PLEASE PROVISDE CONTACT DETAILS: Would all Nationals skaters please provided dates of travel and contact details for your time in Wanganui to Fiona by Club Champs also. A cellphone number, landline number for Wanganui (if you have one) and Wanganui address please. This is needed in case of programme timetable changes. Changes do get made and as team manager, Fiona is happy to let you know of changes that affect you – she can only do this if she has contact details.

CLUB CHAMPS TROPHIES NOW PLEASE:  Would all those skaters who won trophies at Club Champs 2005, please return your trophies (cleaned and polished ready for presentation to the next recipient) to Bruce Crosby as soon as possible. A sign in sheet will be on the club notice board, please sign this when returning the trophies.

PATCH CLASS PRACTICE FOR CLUB CHAMPS: Special permission has been granted for patch class members who are not on a part or full card to practice for Club Champs between 2 and 2.50pm only on Saturdays until the event. There will be no coaching – this time is offered as a practice time only.  Only patch skaters who are entered in club champs are able to use this time, and practice is to be confined to freeskating routines, dances and figures that the skater is competing at Club Champs. It is not a general practice time. Other members may also be practising at this time and everyone needs to use rink etiquette. If you are not sure what that is please ask. Please be aware that unless paying full card rates patch skaters may not start skating until 2pm as other full card members may be practising.

PATCH CLASS PARTY: The last Patch Class of the year will be held on Tuesday December 12.  It will be a Patch Class party – skating games, fun and food. Kiwi speed skaters most welcome Please bring a plate to share and the club will provide drinks for all patch class skaters and coaches. Patch class starts again in 2007 on Tuesday February 13 so mark that date in your diary now.

CLUB SKATES RETURN: All club skates out on loan must be returned by the end of Patch Class on December 12. Please remember to sign them in at the desk before you leave. If you cannot attend that night the skates will need to be returned after Club Champs on December 10.

PLEASE RETURN CHOCOLATE MONEY: Thanks to everyone who has sold chocolate bars for the club – we appreciate your efforts. Please could all money be returned as soon as possible as we would like to have this all signed off before Christmas. Thanks.

CENTRAL DISTRICTS LEAGUE COMPETITION HELD HERE: A very successful Central Districts League Competition was held at out rink on Saturday November 4. Fun and friendship is the spirit of league competitions and this one was no different. It was exciting to see several of our patch class skaters competing at a competition of this type for the first time – congratulations on your achievement, Claudia Steiner, Maia Broughton Edwards, Grace Cooper and Hayley Patten.  A lot of time and work goes into planning and putting on these competitions and we thank Manawatu Showground’s, Sharron Jenkins for her commitment in organization. Thanks also to everyone else who helped in some way before, during and after (cleaning up).  Thanks especially to:- the judges, Bill and Alison Hancock, Raewyn Hailes, Karen Reader, Charlene Crosby, and Sharron Jenkins; the scorers, Gerry Allen (who traveled all the way from Hawera to score) and Graham and Sharron Jenkins (who traveled from Palmerston North) and the announcers: Barrie Dean and David Linney; without these people’s considerable time commitment, events like league could not be run. Full competition results are at the end of this newsletter.

UPPER HUTT CLUB BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION/REUNION. FEBRUARY 2007. BE THERE:  We are having a “Bring a Plate” and social skate at the rink on the evening of February 3, 2007 starting @ 5pm to mark the club’s 25th birthday.

All current and former members are invited to attend. If you know any former club members who are no longer associated with a skating club, but may be interested in attending our birthday celebration/reunion, please pass this information on to them and ask them to register with Debs 5262261 or debs.mccarthy@xtra.co.nz so they receive information direct. Thanks.

PUBLIC OPEN DAY 2007: Our last Saturday public session for 2006 will be 16th December. Our first public session of 2007 will be Saturday February 3, 1-4pm. This will be a free open day where members of the public can come along for a skate and also be entertained by displays from our members. More details next newsletter.

CAN YOU HANDLE A PAINTBRUSH?: We are looking for the help of someone who can handle a paintbrush to paint the toilet area and rink  internal walls. We have the funding available for the equipment – just need the manpower. If you feel this is a way you could make a contribution to the club, we would like to hear from you. Please phone Debs McCarthy on 5262261 or e-mail debs.mccarhty@xtra.co.nz. Thanks.

PLEASE CAN YOU HELP US WITH FORM/BENCH SEATING: Several of our bench seats are showing signs of age and need to be removed? Problem – we don’t have any more to replace them with. Does anyone have any form or bench seating they could donate to the club – just one seat even would be a help? If you can please let Debs McCarthy know as soon as possible. If you belong to an organisation, church, school board or committee that has bench seating that may be surplus to requirements – could you please ask the organisation if they have any they no longer need. Thanks a lot.
