June 2006
UPPER
HUTT OPEN COMPETITION: We enjoyed a most successful Open Competition over
the weekend (June 24 and 25) with skaters attending from Manawatu, Hawera, Nelson
and Upper Hutt clubs. Thank you all for your support!!!.
A special thanks to the officials – judges, scorers, marshals and announcers –
who gave their time voluntarily to ensure the smooth running of the
competition. Thanks to everyone else who helped too but preparing food, manning
the shop, cleaning up and setting up before the event, cleaning up and packing
down afterwards. A lot of work goes into getting everything we need to the rink
and set up – thanks everyone.

CONGRATULATIONS
WELLINGTON SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR FINALIST: Congratulations to Upper
Hutt club member and NZFRS President, Roger
Boulcott, was one of three finalists in the Wellington Sportsperson of the
Year awards, Sports Administrator category, announced earlier this month. Roger
did well to face off a huge number of nominees from the greater Wellington
region to become a finalist. While he did not win, the two men who shared the
award were both full-time professional administrators who have plenty of
business dollars behind them in promotion. The fact that Roger as a volunteer,
and Roller sports was up there alongside people whose full-time job is sports
promotion and administration is a credit to Roger and something to be proud of.
Thanks for all you do for the sport Roger!!!!
SPECIAL
NIGHT DISCO: If you
haven’t done it already, mark July 29
7-9.30pm in your diaries now. We’ll be running a special night disco –
great theme, great prizes, great games, great music.
All proceeds will go into our international travel fund to help subsidise club
members who travel overseas to represent our club at competitions. We are lucky
to have a great group of top level skaters in our club – and I am sure more to
come in the future – its great if we can help them out….and have fun doing
it!!! Please encourage your friends and family to come to this so we have a
good night and raise as much as possible. Entry is $7
including skates or blades for non-club members and $5 for club members.
SCHOOL HOLIDAY PUBLIC SESSIONS: School finishes
on June 30 for the holidays. We will be running public sessions six
days a week in the holidays – they are a great activity to invite friends to.
Sessions are Mon-Fri 1.30-3.30pm (starting Monday July 3) and Saturdays 3-5pm.
Members paying rink fees get in free – so it’s a cost effective school holiday
activity. Also please check booking
sheet for private bookings during the holidays
AREA
MEDAL TESTS: Area medal tests will be held at Pascal Street Stadium,
Palmerston North on August 19/20. Medals from Medal 1 up can be sat. Registration
form is on the notice board - closes July 13 @6pm.
PLEASE RETURN CLUB SKATES: A reminder to those of you with club skates on loan that
these need to be returned at the latest on Tuesday June 27 after patch class for
use in the school holidays. Please remember to check them in at the desk so
they are marked off as returned in the book. You will be able to borrow them
again after the school holidays.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING:
Our Annual General Meeting will be held at the rink at 6.30pm,
Tuesday July 18 (immediately after patch class). It’s generally a short meeting
when the financial report, president’s and coach’s’ reports are presented. We
need a quorum of voting members for this meeting so please try and be there. Just a reminder, that the rink will be
closed for skating during the meeting.
CLUB COMMITTEE: The committee consists of a President, Vice-President,
Secretary, Treasurer, 6 ordinary members and a junior representative. You may
nominate a club member for a specific office or as a general committee member. Nominations
forms will be posted on notice board by the end of the month. Completed forms
MUST be with the Secretary, Debs McCarthy by Sunday July 16 @ 3:00 pm. If you
are interested in becoming a part of the committee and would like to know more
about what is involved please speak to one of the current members. Their names
and contact numbers are at the end of this newsletter.
JUNIOR REP: We have a junior
representative on the committee. If you are older than 12 and would be keen to
be the voice of our younger members please talk to Chris Hazelwood for more
details. Nomination forms for this position must be to Debs by July Sunday 9.
REMITS: Anyone wanting to put a remit forward at the AGM please have a copy to Debs McCarthy by 6.30pm Tuesday July 4.
COACHES:
Coaches
are asked to submit a report on coaching of your skaters over the last year.
This report will be read out at the AGM and recorded. If you cannot be at the
meeting to present your report, please e-mail it to bing.c@paradise.net.nz , post to Bruce
at PO Box 40835, Upper Hutt or give to a committee member by July 17. Thanks to
all coaches for the effort you have put into our skaters over the year.
YOUR
SUBS:
Because of the increased costs in maintaining our building – for example rent
and power – we have to bring in more money in to offset costs to members. We
have managed to keep the annual subscription fee unchanged again this year –
but on the basis that our public sessions will bring in extra revenue. If this
doesn’t happen, we will be forced to increase subs. To keep our public sessions
operating we need club members to take their turn on
the roster – lately many have just not been turning up. We respectfully request
that you check the roster which has been e-mailed to you if you receive your
newsletter by e-mail, or pick up a hard copy from the rink and make sure if you
can’t make your allocated spot you swap with someone else. If public session help from members doesn’t increase – fees will – and
no-one wants that.
PUBLIC SESSION PRICE INCREASE: Because of increasing costs to run our facility, we have been forced to
increase the price of public sessions slightly. The entry charge will rise July
01 to $5. Blade hire will remain at $3 and skates free. This will obviously not
affect rink fee paying members who will continue to enjoy being able to get
into these sessions free. Hopefully the long promised membership cards will be
available when subs are renewed this year – you will need to show your
membership card to gain free entry.
FUNDRAISING PRODUCTS IDEAS AND EVENTS: We will need to rely more heavily on fundraising
also if we want to keep our subs and rink fees down. If anyone has any access to
products which could be purchased at a low cost, that we could sell on at a
profit please could you let Mary-Anne (5289127) know. Also if you have any
suggestions for fundraising events – or can run an event, please talk to
Mary-Anne.
RINK USAGE: Its great to see so many people
skating, but as a result the rink is becoming more crowded and more than ever
there is a need for all members to observe rink etiquette.
If
you are a patch card fee payer, this means you are only entitled to skate
during the 5.30pm-6.30pm patch class and at public sessions. Please remain
seated until 5.30pm and after 6.30pm so as not to obstruct those skaters who
are paying to use the rink at that time.
If
you want to skate more often you can transfer to a different fee structure.
A part card
allows you to skate patch class, public sessions and one nominated day per week
(this can be Tuesday outside patch class). You must transfer to part card rates
if you wish to skate at any other time than patch class and public sessions –
this includes just before and just after patch class.
A
full card allows you to skate every
day and is ideal for those who have private coaching and also want to practice
between times. If you would like more information about fee structure please
talk to our treasurer, David Linney.
SKATES AVAILABLE FOR LOAN, HIRE, SALE:
We
are often asked where members can get skates from. The short answer is don’t buy them in the shops, The skates available in shops are
generally not suitable for artistic skating. They don’t have enough ankle
support and are mostly too heavy. We can loan, hire, sell you second hand
skates or point you in the direction of companies in New Zealand who sell new
skates and skate parts.
For more information please feel free to ask Chris or Mary-Anne.
