CLUB NAMES TWO NEW LIFE MEMBERS

Congratulations to new life members, Margaret Day and Bruce Crosby.

Margaret and Bruce were nominated for Life Membership at the club’s annual meeting last week. The club would not be where it is today without the input of these two hard working people. Both have been involved in all facets of the club’s life and given up countless hours to help others. Special mention must be made of Margaret’s role as Patch Class head coach for 13 years. Patch Class is where our new skaters and club members come from – without Margaret’s reliable dedication the club may not have the numbers of new members it has.

There are probably very few days in a year when Bruce does not spend time at the rink and away from the rink carrying out business on behalf, of the club. It’s scary to think where we would be without this amazing commitment.

We hope Margaret and Bruce will enjoy their life membership and look forward to their continued involvement in the life of the club

SPECIAL NIGHT DISCO THIS SATURDAY: Don’t miss it!!!. This Saturday you have a rare chance to skate to great recorded sounds under the disco lights. There’ll be skating demos, skating games, spot prizes – even a new shirt from the Kia Kaha Campbell range sighed by Michael Campbell himself. This is a fundraiser to help two club members get to World Speed Championships in South Korea next month and to kick start our fund to help club members to get to Oceania’s in Australia in 2007.

Our Mid Winter Nite Disco runs from 7-9.30pm (July 29) please make an effort to be there – and bring along some friends. It takes a lot of effort to put on these events, so please help the club make it worthwhile.

This is a great way to help our skaters and have fun doing it. Entry is $7 (non-members) including skates or blades and $5 for club members. There are fliers available at the desk please take some to your school or workplace and encourage others to attend.

GOOD LUCK SAM AND ANTONY: Two club members, Sam Wright and Antony Hazelwood leave for Speed World Championships in South Korea next month. We are proud of their achievements being selected to represent New Zealand at this level and wish them safe travels and successful competition!!!

PATCH PASSES: Patch class continues to go well with large numbers of skaters attending each week. We really value the expertise of Crystal Jones, Margaret Day and all our other voluntary coaches who are sharing their skills so well. Congratulations to Russell Johnson, Alex Carter and Rosie Carter who passed Patch 1 during the last month.

SKATER/COACH OF THE MONTH: Congratulations to Hayley Patten who was our Patch Class Skater of the Month for June. Hayley works really hard every week and thoroughly deserves this award.  Congratulations also to Jacqui McKelvey who was Coach of the Month for June. It’s great to have someone with Jacqui’s skating skills and coaching ability helping at our Patch Class. Thanks Jacqui.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Happy Birthday to Martina Steiner, Sam Wright, Logan Zammit, Karen Reader and Fiona Hazelwood. We hope you had a great day.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING:

Our Annual General Meeting was held at the rink Tuesday July 18. It was great to have a good attendance – we are encouraged by your interest. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to be there – and special thanks to Chris Hazelwood for the lovely home baking.

OUTGOING COMMITTEE: The outgoing committee, (Bruce Crosby, Chris Hazelwood, Debs McCarthy, David Linney, Mary-Anne Thomson, Raewyn Hailes, Chris Picard, Cathie McCallum and Peter McKenzie and Sam Wright (Junior Rep) were thanked for their efforts on behalf of all club members. This has been a committee who puts the needs of all members first - not just the needs of their own families. All committee members have worked hard in the last year – it takes a lot to maintain our facility and keep the club running – we have no paid workers, everyone is a volunteer. Things don’t just happen, but involve a lot of hard, usually un-noticed and unrecognised effort. It was good to be able to formally thank this hard working group of people.

NEW CLUB COMMITTEE: Our committee for the next year was elected. This year it will comprise:- Bruce Crosby (President), Ken Wright (Vice-President), Debs McCarthy (Secretary), David Linney (Treasurer), Mary-Anne Thomson, Chris Picard, Chris Hazelwood, Fiona Patrick, Janeen Jones  and Fiona Bowden with Emma Hazelwood as the Junior Rep. Its again encouraging to welcome new members onto the committee – Ken, Janeen, Fiona and Fiona. It’s always good to have a blend of experience and fresh ideas!!!
