Upper Hutt Roller Skating Club Newsletter

December 2006

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS: A really enjoyable Club Championships artistic section was held at the rink on Sunday. Thanks to all competitors, judges, officials and everyone who contributed in other ways like providing food, manning the shop etc – without you all we couldn’t run this fun event. A special thank you to family members and friends who came along to support skaters – you being there is important and made this event the special day it is. It was exciting to see so many new skaters competing for the first time. Even though only a few could win a place – all skated well and could be proud of their achievements – we look forward seeing these new skaters develop further in 2007.

Special Awards

Congratulations to this year’s winners of two special awards presented annually:-

Hayley Patten, aged 5 (pictured left with club president, Bruce Crosby) won the Wellington Reunion Cup for the youngest placed artistic competitor. Hayley won her primary freeskating event.

WORLD CLASS COACHING:  Skate NZ’s Artistic Committee is working on bringing some top class coaches to NZ over the next year or so. Steve Bowman from Australia has been secured to come to NZ to work with our Dance skaters in late January/ early February 2007.  They also have negotiations underway with Pat and Mike Jacques from the USA to travel onto NZ after the 2007 World Artistic Champs in Australia in 2007.

It is planned for Steve Bowman to be in New Zealand from January 26-29 2007. He will be running workshops in Palmerston North from January 26 and in Auckland from January 28, 2007. Steve is a well respected Dance coach who will be offering sessions for beginners through to advanced for both solo dance and pairs dance. More information Further information will be available in January, but if you are interested pencil these dates in your diary.

2007 ARTISTIC SCHEDULE:  The 2007 schedule has been completed by the Artistic Committee and will be available early in the New Year. Some points of interest: There are new CIPA requirements for next year. This involves bringing a 3rd group of figures in for Junior International, changes to the order of skating of requirements in freeskating short programme and new requirements for international grade long programmes for Junior and Senior. There are also new OD and Freedance requirements. Solo Dance will also be introduced for the first time at Worlds in Australia next year. Skaters will skate 2 compulsory dances and a freedance. This is a very exciting new element!!! All the new rules and regulations will be released with the schedule early in 2007.
