Upper Hutt Roller Skating Club Newsletter

August 2006

Sam and Antony are in Korea

Our club members Antony Hazelwood (left) and Sam Wright (right) are currently in Anyang, Korea competing at the 2006 World Speed Skating Championships.

We wish both these skaters all the best and look forward to hearing their results. Sam is skating at Worlds for the second time, as it’s his last in the Junior Men’s grade, he is aiming to medal.

Antony is competing at world level for the first time and his goal is to learn as much as he can from the experience to help him in his future international events.

Good luck guys!!!!!

REGIONAL COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON: Our club president, Bruce Crosby has been elected as Regional Committee Chairperson. Congratulations Bruce and thanks for the extra work you will be putting into the sport on behalf of all skaters.

CLUB CAPTAIN: Chris Hazelwood has been re-appointed by our club committee to the position of Club Captain. Thanks for your willingness to serve in this way Chris.

MEMBERSHIP CARDS: Our new membership cards will be issued in the next week or two. Please keep these handy as they will be required as identity cards for free /$2 entry at public sessions. As our club grows, it is very difficult for our public session helpers to know who should pay what entry charge, so the cards will make it easier.

Free entry is available (On presentation of your membership card) for those members paying rink fees (patch card, part card or full card). Non rink fee paying members (mostly speed members) get a discounted entry ($2).

Public session helpers have been told from September 1 – no card – no free/discounted entry. Please don’t be offended if you are refused free entry if you can’t produce the card our club is quite large now and we do need to be able to introduce some new systems.

MEDAL TEST PASSES: Congratulations to the following club members who passed medal tests in Palmerston North recently: - Figures: - Laura McKenzie (Medal 6); Freeskating: - Tessa Halcrow-Webb (Medals 4 & 5), Solo Dance: - Kelsi Linney (Medal 5), Emma Hazelwood (Medal 5), Laura McKenzie (Medals 5 & 6).

CENTRAL AREA CHAMPIONSHIPS: Just a reminder to artistic skaters that if you wish to be considered for entry into Nationals 2007 you must qualify through Area Championships which are being held in Palmerston North from October 6-8. Even if you don’t wish to progress to Nationals, you may like to consider skating at Areas. Entries for this championship close at the club on August 28. An entry form is on the notice board now. If you need more information please talk to your coach urgently about this. Payment must be received with entry. If payment is not received by closing date your registration will not be sent (even if you have filled in the entry form). No late entries will be accepted.

BANKED TRACK NATIONALS 2007: Skate NZ has advised that Speed Banked Track Nationals 2007 will be held in Blenheim in lat February 2007. More details will be advised when we receive them.

OCEANIAS 2007:

Skate Australia has advised that the dates for Oceanias 2007 are:-

Speed will be in Brisbane              8-13 April 2007

Artistic will be in Gold Coast       6-11 July 2007

We will let you know more information when we receive it.

Skate NZ has told us that they will be suggesting to Australia that the Oceania Championships be renamed to Oceania Commonwealth Competitions to attract more countries and pave the way to inclusion in the Commonwealth Games.   The outcome of these discussions will be reported on at a later date.

MID WINTER NIGHT DISCO: Our mid-winter Night disco was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who helped organise and run the event, publicised it, came along and brought friends. Thanks to Tessa Halcrow-Webb who put on a freeskating demonstration and Antony Hazelwood and all the other speed skaters who put on a speed skating demo. The event raised nearly $1100 for our international skaters support fund. Wow!!. We have been able to provide a grant of $300 each to Antony and Sam towards their Worlds travel expenses and have a good start to the fund to help our Oceania Skaters next year.

SPRING STARLIGHT SKATE: Because our last night disco was so successful we have planned another. Please mark Saturday night October 14 from 7.30pm till 10pm in your diaries now. We will be having a special Spring Starlight Skate Disco. More great skating to superb music under the party lights.  Tell your friends now and make it a date. Again proceeds will go to our international support fund. More details next newsletter.

CAN EVERY FAMILY PLEASE HELP WITH A DONATION: We are aiming to run a monster raffle before Christmas as a fundraiser to help support our team travelling to Nationals in 2007.  We are expecting this may be a large team and as they are representing our club it is great to be able to help subsidise the great personal expense they go to, to represent us.

We would like to have a first prize of a Barbecue pack and other prizes of a Pamper pack, Kids Pack and a Chocoholics Pack.

We are requesting every family donates an item/s or tracks down a suitable item/s from friends or employers. This is a good time to hit up those contacts you have in business or social circles that may be able to donate a suitable prize. We are happy to acknowledge prize donations in the newsletter and for large anchor donations (such as a barbecue) on the tickets themselves.

For the barbecue pack - we really would like a barbecue, along with things like meat vouchers, plastic dinnerware, plastic glassware, a hamper, non-perishable food items, suitable for a barbecue for instance sauces, chutneys, chippies etc.

For the pamper pack we’d love an anchor prize of a day spa, a nights free accommodation somewhere or something to that effect (does anyone know anyone who could help us), a nice hamper or other useful container to hold the items, vouchers for manicure/pedicure/ facial etc, nice body products like bath products, moisturisers etc, other cosmetic and toiletry items.

The Chocoholics Pack is pretty self explanatory – everything and anything with a chocolate theme – plus of course a hamper or something suitable to put other items in.

The Kids Pack again is pretty self explanatory – any new items for kids like books, toys, food vouchers, leisure vouchers (movies, swimming pool etc etc).

Thanks for your help. Items will be collected from now till September 10 so we know what we have to get tickets printed. You can hand your items to any committee member listed at the bottom of this newsletter.

CHANGES TO COACHING TIMES: It’s exciting to have a growing club – and great to have so many skaters on full cards being coached and practising at the rink. This does mean however that practice time is at a premium. So that everyone can get the most out of their coaching, and their personal practice the committee is requesting the following process be observed:-

Coaches have priority on the rink and for music when coaching. Most coaches have a recognised weekly time slot. Coaches, when you are going to be coaching at a time other than your normal slot please make a note on the club whiteboard as early as possible so other skaters can work around this when considering practice times. Similarly if you are not going to be coaching in your normal recognised time slot (i.e.: Raewyn/Imelda Monday, Karen Wednesday, Sarah-Jane Friday etc); that you also make a note of this on the whiteboard so others who might not have come can factor this in when planning practice times. Hopefully this will make better use of floor time for all concerned.

CLUB UNIFORM:  Our club tracksuits and t-shirt look fantastic and certainly give Upper Hutt a presence at competitions. They were a huge financial investment for the club and we want to ensure they are available in good condition for our skaters to wear for several years.

So that everyone knows where they stand, the committee has clarified use of club uniforms.

Club tracksuits and t-shirts will be issued to Federated Competitive Skaters and Nationals and Bank Track Nationals team managers only. They will be signed out to skaters (or in the case of children, their guardian) in time for wearing to the first Federated competition of the year – this is likely to be Laurie Hastie Competition in May. Those skaters may hold on to the tracksuit for wearing to skating competitions only, until after Nationals (Artistic Skaters)/Banked Track Nationals (Speed Skaters) when they will be collected back. Rules of use (Things like – they may only be worn to/from/during skating competitions – not anywhere else) will be issued with the track suits.

SUPPORTERS JACKETS: We encourage coaches, officials, parents and other supporters to be a part of the “Upper Hutt presence” at competitions, by wearing the club jacket too. To facilitate this the committee is arranging the manufacture of supporters jackets. These will be exactly the same as the club uniform jackets, with the word supporter under the club patch. The cost will be the same as the club uniform jackets – approximately $60 each. All sizes (children’s and adults) will be available. Orders will be placed next month to endeavour to have the jackets by Areas. If you are interested in buying a jacket, please see the committee’s uniform co-ordinator, Fiona Patrick (phone 9711044) ASAP.

SKATE NZ WEBSITE: A new look Skate NZ Website will be launched at the Annual General Meeting to be held in Wellington on September 16. watch out for it to become live. There will be news flashes, team announcements, calendar and technical information.
