Thanks to fundraising over the past year, the club was able to donate $140 towards each person skating for the Upper Hutt Club’s costs.

PATCH PASSES:  Patch class continues to hum every Tuesday night. And again we have plenty of people to congratulate for passes this month. Well done to:- Jacinta Bowden, Brittany Philps, Eleanor Hamilton, Dallas Asker, Sharra Emmerson-Goodwin (patch 1), Georgia Oliver, Zoe Bowkany, Stephanie James, Charlotte Hamilton, Laura Hamilton (patch 2), Nancy Blaikie, Chantelle McCarthy, Cody Bowkany, Candeece Blaikie (patch 3) and Martina Steiner (patch 4).

Certificates for these passes, along with skater of the month and coach of the month awards, will be presented at our end of month patch ceremony on April 25 (yes there is Patch Class on Anzac Day). For those passing patch 2 and above, don’t forget to bring your certificates back so we can add your next pass for presentation on April 25.

SKATER OF THE MONTH: Congratulations to Brittany Philps who is Patch Class Skater of the Month for March.

COACH OF THE MONTH: Congratulations to Emma Patrick who was awarded Patch Class Coach of the Month for March.  We really appreciate the help of Emma and all our voluntary coaches who give up their time to help skaters learn.

We have a huge patch class at the moment and without these people volunteering their time we would have to limit the number of new skaters we can accept or charge more in patch fees. We really appreciate the following people who gave their time voluntarily over the last month to help coach at patch class:- Tanya McCarthy, Kimberley Dean, Kyra, Nika and Mary-Anne Thomson, Kelsi Linney, Emma and Chris Hazelwood and Emma, Jack and Fiona Patrick.

A special thank you, to Michelle Crosby who is acting patch class supervisor, while Margaret is away overseas.

Patch class is the back bone of our club – from here we get our new competitive skaters coming through.

We really need more coaches – particularly adults, and non-skating adults to assist the coaches with ensuring their groups stay focussed. If you can help, even just occasionally, please come along on a Tuesday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Thanks.

NEW MEMBERS: It’s fantastic to welcome new members, Maia Broughton-Edwards, Nancy Blaikie, Ruby Bosworth and Rachel Mackley this month. We are sure you will enjoy being a part of the club; please ask others if there is any help you need.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Happy Birthday to Kimberley Dean, Nathan Gordon, Jesshaye Hill, Lewis Johnson, Ollie Jones, Peter McKenzie and Mary-Anne Thomson we hope you enjoyed your day. Another special congratulation to Michelle Crosby who celebrated her 21st on April 5.

PATCH CLASS IS ON OVER THE HOLIDAYS: Yes that’s right. Patch class is on during the holidays. We even have patch presentation of Skater of the Month and Coach of the Month so please come along as normal.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY DISCOS ARE ON: We are running public skating sessions during the holidays – including Anzac Day. Times are:- 1-3.30pm weekdays - that is April 17 to 25 (including Anzac Day). And 3-5pm Saturdays. A great thing for families to do in the holidays so tell all your friends!!!!

LAURIE HASTIE COMPETITION - MAY: The entry form for this competition to be held at Pascal Street Stadium, Palmerston North on May 13 and 14 is now up on the notice board. Entry fee is $20 for one event and $30 for two or more events. Entries close at our club on April 21. No late entries will be accepted and the entry fee must be paid to the Upper Hutt Club competition secretary by this date or the entry will not be valid. For more information about, whether this competition is for you, speak to your coach, or if you don’t have a coach, Chris Hazelwood or Mary-Anne Thomson.

UPPER HUTT OPEN COMPETITION - JUNE: Our open competition will be held at the rink on June 24/25. The entry forms and more details will be on the notice board next month. Keep and eye out for this and talk to your coach if you have one about whether this is suitable for you. If you don’t have a coach, and would like more information please talk to Chris Hazelwood or Mary-Anne Thomson.

SKATE MAINTENANCE: If you have club skates on loan or own your own skates you should be giving them a little regular maintenance to check and clean the bearings, tighten nuts and screws etc. A big, thank you, to Gary Hazelwood, for running a very enlightening skate maintenance class earlier this month. This session will really help those new to skates get the most from their/child’s skates.

FREESKATING SQUAD WITH DAVID HOOK: World class coach David Hook will be running a freeskating squad at our rink on May 21. David is a fantastic coach and this is a great opportunity for skaters from around patch 2 or 3 through to our international level skaters, to learn new skills.

A sign up sheet and more information is on the notice board now. Closing date for registration is May 2 so if you want to be involved in this then sign up now. If you would like more information about whether this is the right thing for you or your child to get involved with, please talk to Chris or Mary-Anne.

MORO BARS/NUT BARS FUNDRAISERS: Thanks to everyone who has agreed to sell Moro Bars and Nut Bars as a fundraiser for us, and particularly to those of you who have already returned your money!!!!

What we raise will go towards subsidising the cost upcoming local medal tests and future tests – so all skaters will benefit directly. Judges travel and meal expenses and other overheads such as hall hire when we use Riverstone Recreation means the costs of sitting a test locally are reasonably high. We have been able to subsidise costs of the May and June testing sessions so that skaters will be charged a flat charge of $5 per test along with the NZFRS medal fee (which goes directly to the Federation) thanks to this fundraising. Any extra money raised will be held aside to subsidise future local medal tests.

All Moro Bars are out at the moment, but they have been so popular we are looking at ordering some more. These should be available shortly.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: Our Annual General Meeting will be held at the rink at 6.30pm on Tuesday July 18 (immediately after patch class). It’s generally a short meeting when the financial report, presidents and coach’s reports are presented. We need a quorum of voting members for this meeting so please try and be there.

NATIONALS 2007: It’s official, Nationals 2007 will be held in Wanganui from December 30 2006 to January 6 2007. Mark this on you calendar now.

INFORMATION FOR PATCH CLASS SKATERS: Just a few reminders:-

·         Bring a drink bottle and leave it on the wall at the side of the rink during the sessions. This saves wasting time during class leaving the rink to get a drink.

·         Wear comfortable casual clothing. Jeans are very restrictive, skirts can be a problem. Best thing for girls/women is leotards or track suit pants and several layers of tops which can be discarded as the skater warms up. For boys/men, flexible tracksuit pants and several layers of top.

·         It’s a good idea to be at the rink by 5.20pm so you can be ready with skates on for the session to start at 5.30pm. But once you are ready please remain seated until 5.30pm. Until 5.300pm is a time that skaters being privately coached, or competitive skaters are entitled to practice. The only people who are able to skate before 5.30pm are those paying full card rink fees or those on part cards with their nominated day as Tuesday.

·         Its fine to stay after patch class for a social time, but again please do not skate on the rink or figure circle areas. Again these areas are used then either for patch testing, private coaching or competitive practice.  Patch fees entitle skating from 5.30pm to 6.30pm and at public sessions only. If you would like to be able to skate more than this please talk to Chris Hazelwood or Mary-Anne Thomson about moving onto a different rink fee.

LEOTARDS FOR SALE: We currently have a range of second hand leotards and brand new practice skirts available for purchase. If you are looking for something and it is not on display, please ask Chris or Mary-Anne who will be able to help you.

SKATES AVAILABLE FOR LOAN, HIRE, SALE:

We are often asked where members can get skates from. The short answer is don’t buy them in the shops, The skates available in shops are generally not suitable for artistic skating. They don’t have enough ankle support and are mostly too heavy.

We can loan, hire, sell you second hand skates or point you in the direction of companies in New Zealand who sell new skates and skate parts.

For more information please feel free to ask Chris or Mary-Anne.

ROOF WORK: Please be aware the roof may be being worked on between April 16 and 23. Skaters will need to be aware of where the builder is working and avoid being under that area. Please also check the floor carefully before skating to ensure nothing has dropped down from the roof.

PRIVATE BOOKINGS: If you are thinking of practising at the rink during the day, don’t forget to check the private bookings roster. We have Home School in every second Thursday 1.30-3.30pm and Maidstone Intermediate in during terms 2 and 3 every Wednesday from 1.15pm to 2.30pm. Helpers for these sessions are always needed. Please see Bruce or Chris if you can spare a few hours.

FAIRPLAY CODE FOR SUPPORTERS: Below is the Skate NZ Fairplay Code for Supporters. We encourage everyone to read and live by this code.
