SPECIAL NIGHT DISCO:  On October 8 from 7-9.30pm we’re having a special “Black and White” themed night disco to raise funds to help our club members represent the area at Nationals (to be held in January 2006).

You have a rare chance to enjoy night skating to great-recorded sounds, plus live music from teen band “Call to Arms”. So join the fun - there’ll be spot prizes for those dressed in black and/or white and skating games.

Children under 10 are welcome to attend, but must be accompanied by an adult. Door charge is $6 per person (including those paying rink fees) and includes skates or blades if you need them. There will be snacks and hot and cold drinks for sale.

Please invite your friends and family to enjoy this fun night (which will help our club members). For more information you can phone Mary-Anne on 5289127 or Cathie on 5297670.

CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations to UHRSC member, Roger Boulcott, who has just been elected for another term as New Zealand Federation of Roller Sports President and Jacqui Jones who has been elected as East Central Region Chairperson. Thanks to both of you for your commitment to roller sport.

CENTRAL AREA COMPETITION: We have a group of around 35 club members (skaters and officials) heading to Napier on October 15 and 16 to compete at Central Area Championships. This is an important competition on the skating calendar because our skaters need to do well qualify to represent the Central Area at Nationals. Good luck everyone!!!

NATIONAL SKATERS: Skaters hoping to qualify for Nationals should be receiving their paperwork any day now. This will need to be checked and returned to David Linney by the end of Areas. The club will be paying the registration fee for each skater; event fees will need to be paid to David by the end of Areas.

SUNDAY RINK TIME CHANGE:  We have arranged a swap of Sunday rink time with the Hockey Club. This means those going to Areas will have extra weekend practice time.

Please note that the rink will be available to UHRSC members during the day of the first Sunday in October (that’s the 2nd). Hockey will have the rink all day on Sunday October 16.

SQUAD WITH DAVID HOOK: World-class coach, David Hook ran a most successful Freeskating squad on September 11 at our rink. For beginners through to international level skaters, all who participated learned a lot. We are lucky to have the opportunity to get this standard of coaching from someone of this level. Thank you very much David.

DANCE YOUR SOCKS OFF: Thanks to Laura McKenzie, Kimberley Dean, Emma Patrick, Tanya McCarthy, Emma Hazelwood, Tessa Halcrow-Webb, Nika Thomson, Kelsi Linney, Stefanie McCallum, Oliver Ewert and Kyra Thomson) who were involved in demonstrating our sport to a huge crowd at Kilbirnie Recreation Centre recently as part of the Dance Your Socks Off programme. This was a great way to show the general public the dance skating we do, as well as freeskating and precision.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY SKATING: September/October school holidays are underway and as has become tradition, we are running our public holiday sessions, Monday – Friday, 1:00 – 3:30 pm for both weeks.

Don’t forget members paying rink fees can attend these sessions at no charge so come along and enjoy.

Because we don’t have any paid workers (everything is done by volunteers so we can keep your fees as low as possible) we need help running these sessions along with some private bookings in the mornings.

Thanks to those of you who have already put your names down to help. We still need more “manpower” on some days, so please put your name down on the roster on the club notice board – it’s a fun way to do your bit for the club.

MORO BARS: We still have eight boxes to sell and we would really like to be able to forget about Moro Bars for now!!! So please if you can sell just one more box, could you contact Mary-Anne on 5289127.

Thanks to everyone who has sold a box/boxes of Moro Bars. For every box sold the club makes $16 (inc GST) so this is an excellent fundraiser – it helps us keep fees and charges as low as possible.

We also have some outstanding money – so if you have sold your box and haven’t returned the money yet, please give it to Mary-Anne Thomson, David Linney or Chris Hazelwood as soon as possible.

SATURDAY ROSTER: The roster for September/October/November is out and on the notice board at the rink. Please make sure you look at it urgently and take note when you have been rostered on. Please don’t forget to do your duty and if the day you are rostered on doesn’t suit - please arrange for another member to take your place.

PRIVATE RINK BOOKINGS:. If you are thinking of coming to practice, don’t forget to check the private bookings calendar on the notice board regularly. Already we have school visits booked on Oct 11 and 13 from 10am to 12noon and December 15 from 9.30am to 2.30pm. Home School will be in October 13 and 27, as well as November 10 and 24 from 1:30 – 3:30 pm. We also have bookings for most Saturday nights till Christmas. The majority of these sessions are run by Chris Hazelwood or Bruce Crosby. This is a huge investment of their time and we thank them for it. If you could lighten the private bookings load a little by helping out, please contact Chris (phone 5297551) or Bruce (9388718) for more details about what is involved.

SKATE HIRE: We have good quality skates available for hire for those skaters who haven’t reached the stage of wanting to purchase their own yet. Sizes available vary from month to month - If you are interested please see Chris Hazelwood.

SKATES FOR SALE: We also have a stock of skates on hand that members want to sell. What are available changes fairly regularly so if you are looking to buy skates please contact Chris.

Of course we sometimes have members looking to buy skates in sizes we don’t have  - If you have any for sale please let Chris or Bruce know.
