NEW MEMBERS: We welcome new members, Matthew Bly and Michelle Koot. Its fantastic to have you join us, we are sure you’ll have a great time with the club. Others are always willing to help so if there is anything you’d like to know please ask.

PATCH PASSES: Patch class has been going full steam ahead - all have been progressing well. The following have passed patches in the last month:- Congratulations to Karina Murray-Dodd patch 1, Georgia Oliver patch 1, Cheyenne Murray-Dodd patch 1, Ashleigh Jenkins-Hoult patch 2, Vanessa Bowden patch 2, Shantalia Robinson patch 2, Nadia van Dalen patch 2, Alan Doyle patch 3.

Don’t forget embroidered patches are available for purchase on Tuesday nights at patch class ($4 each) for those who have passed. Many skaters sew or glue these onto a skate bag. But they can be sewn on a jacket, pinned on a noticeboard – whatever.

SKATER OF THE MONTH: Congratulations to Vanessa Bowden who is Patch Class Skater of the Month for September. Vanessa has been showing excellence in effort and determination and made spectacular progress in the time she has been skating. She passed both Patch 1 and Patch 2 in around four weeks. Special mention also to Ashleigh Jenkins-Hoult for her superb achievement in passing patches 1 and 2 in around four weeks also.

COACH OF THE MONTH: Congratulations to Nika Thomson who is Patch Class Coach of the Month for September.  Thank you to Nika and all other patch coaches who give their time voluntarily to help new skaters improve their skills.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Birthday wishes to Margaret Day, Oliver Ewert, Sarah Hazelwood, Jacinta Bowden, Nicola Bowden, Alan Thomson, Samantha Major, Charlotte Picard, Candeece Blaikie, Alastair Merrifield, Kelsi Linney and Daniel Patrick for your special day in October.

NATIONALS 2006: During recent Central Area Championships our club had a fantastic 32 members qualify to represent the central area at New Zealand Nationals in January 2006. What’s more, all UHRSC skaters who competed qualified!!!!  Congratulations everyone - especially Jack Patrick, Oliver Ewert, Roger Boulcott, Lewis Johnson, Kieran Phillips, Steve Phillips and Stephanie Challis who will compete in their first Nationals. Full results later in the newsletter.

*Due to illness Michelle Crosby was unable to skate but has applied for a special exemption to skate Nationals, we are hopeful this will be approved soon.

BLACK AND WHITE NIGHT DISCO:  Around 100 people enjoyed a special “Black and White” themed night disco earlier this month. It was lots of fun and raised around $450 to help our nationals team. It was exciting to see so many people enjoying skating under the disco lights to great recorded music and live music from college band “Call to Arms”. A big thank you to Cathie McCallum, David Linney and Mary-Anne Thomson who organised and ran the event. Thanks too to Matt McCallum’s band “Call to Arms” who gave up their night to play for us, Janet Doyle for the donated prizes, Hungry Kiwis Pizza for all the free pizza vouchers we gave away, and everyone who helped in some way. Special mention to Rebecca Hoult who worked tirelessly all night – your help was invaluable. Because of the success of our Black and White Night we will be running another special night disco this year.

CHRISTMAS NIGHT DISCO: Mark Saturday December 17 in your diary now. It will be a fun way to end the year with other club members, your family and friends.

We’ll be holding a Christmas themed Night Disco. There’ll be spot prizes for those in Christmas themed costume, games, great recorded sound (hopefully a live band too) and a skating demonstration or two. Because it gets dark later we’ll be running it from 8 to 10.30pm. So invite your friends and family now!!!!  More details next newsletter.

NATIONALS UNIFORM: The club is supplying (at no charge) a trendy new uniform to all Nationals team members. Consisting of a jacket, t-shirt and zip leg track pants, it must be worn by all team members for the Nationals photo in December and for the opening ceremony. While the club will retain ownership of the uniform, skaters may also choose to wear it at any time during nationals and for other events. Because it reflects on the club, the committee asks that it is worn correctly and tidily. Any Nationals supporter or club member who is interested in buying either a complete uniform or maybe just a jacket can see Chris Hazelwood (phone 5297551) to see samples, get prices and order one. Orders must be in by October 29.

NATIONALS TEAM PHOTO: All Nationals team members please mark December 11 on your calendar because we will be taking the team photo that day and would like everyone in it if possible. Time will be advised next newsletter.

SPONSORSHIP OF NATIONALS UNIFORMS: We thank the Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club for their contribution of $500 towards the cost of the Nationals Uniforms. Unfortunately several other grants we have applied for have not come our way. This is where we need your help urgently!!!! We still need around $3000. Please can you ask any businesses you know or are associated with, if they would be prepared to be the major sponsor of the uniform. Please see Mary-Anne Thomson urgently (phone 5289127) for more details. In return for the sponsorship we would be happy to display the sponsors name in a variety of places – including on the uniform.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS: This is a fun competition for all club skaters held right here in Upper Hutt. Please mark December 11 on your calendar and plan to be there. There will be a grade for every club skater from Patch 1 through to international level. The club pays for everything – judging expenses, certificates, programmes, medals, trophy engraving etc. The only cost to skaters is a $5 registration fee. For patch class skaters who don’t have their own coach, we’ll be starting learning short routines in patch class soon.  Entry forms will be on the notice board early November. More information next newsletter.

MEMBERSHIP CARDS: Soon we will be providing membership cards. These cards will be used to identify those of you entitled to $2/free entry to Saturday afternoon/school holiday afternoon discos. Please remember to bring your card to the rink each time you come to a disco. Those people working on the door will be told “no card no reduced/free entry”.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Best Wishes to Sarah-Jane Jones who travels to Rome in mid November to compete at the World Artistic Rollerskating Championships. Go Sarah-Jane!!!!!

UNIVERSITY SPORTS BLUE: Congratulations to Sarah-Jane Jones who has just been awarded a Massey University Sports Blue for Roller Sports.

COLLEGE SPORT NOMINEES: Good luck to Sam Wright and Laura McKenzie who have both been nominated for the 2005 College Sport Awards. We look forward to hearing the results in early November.

TV STARS: Did you see our Rollergirls Team (Stefanie McCallum, Laura McKenzie, Nika Thomson, Emma Hazelwood, Kyra Thomson, Kelsi Linney, Sarah-Jane Jones (Coach) on TV recently. The team won the Milo Team of the Week Award. Well done!!!!!

MORO BARS: Thanks to Bill Pratt and Michelle Crosby who heard last month’s plea and sold boxes of Moro Bars for us. We still have three boxes to sell – I’d love to see them gone this week. Please if you can sell just one more box, could you contact Mary-Anne on 5289127.

We still have some outstanding money – if you have sold your box and haven’t returned the money yet, please give it to Mary-Anne Thomson or David Linney as soon as possible.

LIGHTS: You will be shocked to know that the overall cost of power to the club has gone up 40% on last year. Only part of this is price rises – the rest is usage. Our bill for July was $650. The more power we use – the more we pay – the more we pay the more we have to charge in fees. We have observed that some members come into the rink and automatically switch the lights on, whether they are needed or not. To keep fees as low as possible for all members, please be aware of the cost of power and only use the lighting when really necessary.

SKATE HIRE: We have good quality skates available for hire for those skaters who haven’t reached the stage of wanting to purchase their own yet. Sizes available vary from month to month - If you are interested please see Chris Hazelwood.

SKATES FOR SALE: We have a small stock of skates on hand that members want to sell. What is available changes fairly regularly so if you are looking to buy skates please contact Chris. If you have any skates you’d like to sell, you could also let Chris know.

FIGURE SKATES WANTED: Does anyone have a pair of excellent/good condition figure skates for sale. Prefer size 260 Risport Boot or 255 Edea Boot on Atlas or Roll-Line Plates. Please contact Mary-Anne on 5289127 or thomson@paradise.net.nz if you have anything suitable.
